What is max pain in options?
Max pain is the strike at which the total value of expiring options would be smallest for option holders. It is calculated from open interest across all strikes, and it moves as positioning changes. On SPX it is a positioning reference, not a prediction of where the index will settle.

How is max pain calculated?
For every listed strike, the calculation sums what call holders and put holders would collect if the index settled exactly there. The strike producing the smallest total payout is max pain.
Because the inputs are open interest and strike distance, the level shifts whenever positioning changes — most visibly on the days around a large expiry.
Does the market really move toward max pain?
Sometimes, and mostly on expiry day, when dealers hedging large open interest can pin an index near a heavily traded strike. Outside that window the effect is weak, and any macro catalyst overwhelms it entirely.
The honest use is contextual: if max pain, the call wall, and a high-volume node line up at the same level, that level deserves attention. On its own, max pain earns none.
Max pain vs gamma walls — what is the difference?
Max pain is an expiry-value calculation over all open interest. Gamma walls describe where dealer hedging pressure concentrates right now.
| Max pain | Gamma wall | |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Open interest across strikes | Dealer gamma at a strike |
| Horizon | The expiry | Intraday, live |
| Typical use | Expiry reference | Session support and resistance context |
How do Saudi traders use it on the US session?
With the US cash session opening at 16:30 Riyadh time (17:30 during US standard time), the max pain map is usually set before the session starts, which makes it a convenient pre-session reference for the levels that matter into the close.
